In order to become a truly professional society in every sense of the word, most not-for-profits must contract the services of several different professional specialists.
- Attorneys to file the necessary paperwork to incorporate, to obtain the not-for-profit 501(c)(3) determination from the Internal Revenue Service, to obtain tax-exempt status from the state's Department of Revenue, to obtain charitable status from the state's Attorney General, and to obtain your Federal Employer Identification Number.
- Tax Accountants to file the proper annual forms with the Internal Revenue Service, state's Department of Revenue, and the state's Attorney General.
- Marketing/advertising reps, graphic designers, and printers to create professional promotional materials including business cards and corporate brochures and flyers.
- Information technology specialists and web masters/consultants/programmers to design and develop your Internet presence including the world wide web and email.
Unless these specialists volunteer their time to your society's cause, their fees will be billed out at market rates. More often than not, the market rates for these specialists are quite unaffordable for the typical small to medium sized not-for-profit. Even when rates are discounted or waived, the products and services received may be less than effective and/or less than what was expected.
Many small to medium sized not-for-profits have limited resoures (time and money) available to them. You have a choice to make concerning your not-for-profit.
- You can choose to spend a lot of time, money, and energy contracting with a variety of specialists to help you execute your not-for-profit's corporate charter.
- Or you can contact Thriving Historical Societies now and discover the not-for-profit advantage of working with our organization.
